The Biggest Loser

Today I launched an accidental weight-loss challenge.  What had started out as a personal, friendly $500 wager with a friend of mine has turned into a full-blown biggest-loser competition.  My impulsiveness wins again!  It came together quite nicely, mainly by texting, and we even got the local HIT center to give us a sweet deal on getting our body fat measured in their bod pod (one of the most accurate ways to do so).  Two teams, fourteen people, all on a mission!

My friends are saying, Well, you really don’t have any weight to lose…  “Unless you want to get into the best shape of your life,” said Archie, my personal trainer.  I looked at him and said, “That’s exactly what I’m going to do!”  Why not, right? Why not go for it and get back into the shape that I was in before I started popping out little people? I don’t have far to go, so I say reach for the stars!

The real challenge for most people is exactly what got this competition going– impulsiveness.  Shoving food into your pie-hole without thinking!  What I hope to gain from the next eight weeks is patience and the ability to love small victories, because it’s the daily wins that are going to add up to tight glutes, ripped abs and a tinier waistline at the finish line. It’s bye-bye to chocolate and hello to the food scale.

I have to admit that I love competition, but this one’s not all about me, which in the end makes it easier for me to stick to my goals.  I took on a whole team of friends and acquaintances who wanted to do this as much as I did.  We didn’t publicize this since it’s a trial run for a much bigger weight-loss challenge that Vance’s Blues and Spa Roma will launch in March of 2011.   We ended up having to turn people away since we wanted to keep it small the first go-around.  I hated to have to do that, as I wanted to take on anyone that was up for the challenge, and I promise we will very soon!

The ex-personal trainer in me is so excited to be able to coach my team on eating clean and also with training tips, and the wannabe life coach in me can’t wait for our weekly meetings to pump each other up and give support and coaching to whoever needs it.  It’s awesome to watch people transform themselves in times like these — both internally and externally.  Because we all know to really be able to focus and cut out all the temptations that life offers which sabotage one’s physique is not an easy task.

This time around there’s no cheating and no crash dieting.  Clean eating all the way!  It’s all about losing body fat and preserving muscle. That’s where smart cardio comes in to play — you can’t do too much or it raises your cortisol levels and makes it really hard to shed the last 5-7 pounds (ladies).  It takes time, and once again PATIENCE!!   Working out on and empty stomach first thing in the morning taps into fat stores!

I’m looking forward to the next two months of solace, meditation, goal-achieving, being a great team-leader and player, and doing more yoga (for patience)!!  This is one time I want to be on the losing team!

Namaste (I wrote this in lotus position, ahhhhhh).
